I pushed down hard (perhaps too hard I'm now thinking) to drain the water and it just refused to budge. When I replaced it I had trouble undoing the whole thing but I just had to keep forcing it. It was very hard to get started once I did it came off. Maybe try tapping it lightly with a hammer?
