You can think of it as an appeal to authority or character—persuasive techniques using ethos will attempt to persuade you based on the speaker’s social standing or knowledge. The word ethos even comes from the Greek word for character. Webrhetorician relies on three main methods of appeal – LOGOS, ETHOS and PATHOS. LOGOS is the appeal to Logic; ETHOS is the appeal to character or credibility; and PATHOS is the appeal to emotion. All three need to be present in order to maximize the opportunity for success.
